Toprol xl is a highly efficient drug against hypertension, which is produced in the form of tablets. The basis of the drug is substances such as metoprolol and felodipine.

Toprol xl has a marked hypotensive, antiarrhythmic and anti-anginal action due to the content of felodipine and metoprolol.
Metoprolol is a cardioselective antagonist of beta-adrenergic receptors. This substance contributes to the effective reduction of blood pressure in both quiet condition and during physical exertion.
Its use in stand-alone or integrated therapy can significantly reduce the risk of fatal outcome of cardiovascular disease of persons who suffer from arterial hypertension.
Indications for use
The main indication for the use of combined drug Toprol xl is hypertension. Usually, these tablets are prescribed in cases when monotherapy with the use of beta-blockers or blockers of slow calcium channels has not led to the desired effect.
Method of application
Toprol xl pills are taken orally on an empty stomach in the morning, drinking plenty of fluid. It is not recommended to crush or chew a pill. It is also possible to use it together with a small amount of food, which has a minimum of carbohydrates and fats.
The dose of the drug is prescribed by a doctor
The optimum daily dose is determined by the attending doctor on the basis of therapeutic effect which is taken from the early dosages of drugs which are blockers of the slow calcium channel and beta-blockers.
In most cases, adults and elderly patients are prescribed an initial dosage of 1 tablet 1 time per day. Optionally, if this is not enough for the expected therapeutic effect, it may take 1 tablet 2 times a day.
If a patient has severe hepatic impairment, the maximum dosage is 5 mg per day.
In case of the presence of impaired renal function, the dosage should not be adjusted. Increased caution should be exercised for those who have a diagnosed severe kidney failure.
Toprol xl is usually well tolerated by patients, however, in some cases, there may be side effects:
redness of the face and fever;
swelling of the ankles;
dizziness and headache;
the feeling of fatigue;
exacerbation of angina;
excessive reduction of blood pressure.
In case of overdose with Toprol xl pills, there may be signs of intoxication after approximately 12-16 hours after ingestion. More severe symptoms can manifest in a few days.
The reception of the drug in excessive dosage has adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and may cause bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, congestive heart failure, loss of consciousness and a significant reduction in arterial blood pressure.
Toprol xl can not be used in case if acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina, symptomatic bradycardia, and hypotension.
Another major contraindication to the use of the drug is an individual intolerance of the main and auxiliary components.
