Forms and components
Pharmaceutical companies produce this drug in various dosage forms: ointments, gels, external solutions, vaginal tablets (some women mistakenly call them candles). Therapeutic effect in the treatment of fungal diseases is carried out by the main active ingredient of Lotrisone clotrimazole. It should be noted that the composition of the ointment additionally included glucocorticosteroid beclomethasone dipropionate. The mechanism of clotrimazole is the violation of the production of a special substance, which is an integral part of the cells of fungi – ergosterol. In other words, clotrimazole changes the cellular structure of fungi, which leads to lysis (decomposition) of cells. The active substance of Lotrisone has a harmful effect on moldy and yeast-like fungi, dermatophytes, and is also capable of destroying the causative agents of genital trichomoniasis, pityriasis, gardnerella, erythrasms and even some varieties of streptococci and staphylococci. In turn, beclomethasone dipropionate possesses antipruritic, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties, effectively removing pain, irritation, itching, swelling.
Indications for use
The drug Lotrisone in the form of ointment is used to treat skin and mucous membrane diseases caused by various pathogenic fungi. These include erythrasma, candidal balanitis, paronychia, dermatophytosis, pityriasis, mycosis of the nail plate, candidiasis of the external genitalia and anus, inter-digital erosion, as well as diaper dermatitis of fungal origin. The drug, released in the form of vaginal tablets, is prescribed for candidal vulvitis. The solution for external use is in demand in obstetric practice. It is often used for sanation (antiseptic treatment) of the birth canal before delivery.
Mode of application
Ointment Lotrisone is applied a thin layer three times a day to the affected area of the skin. Duration of treatment is 1 month. The success of therapy largely depends on the regularity of the application of the ointment.
Lotrisone antifungal agent has few contraindications. It is not recommended to use the drug for individual immunity of the ingredients that make up its basis, as well as for women during pregnancy (especially in the first trimester) and breastfeeding of the baby.
The side effects that Lotrisone can cause are mainly manifested in the form of allergic reactions. The skin can respond with irritation, a burning sensation, erythematous rashes, a sensitivity disorder (paresthesia).
