Imitrex is a medication, usually used for the treatment of migraine. It is known under the generic name of Sumatriptan, which belongs to the sulfa drugs. It is sold in the USA by GlaxoSmithKline Corporation.
Sumatriptan in an agonist for a certain kind of receptor (5-hydroxytryptamine1 receptor subtype), located in the cranial arteries and vessels of the dura mater. These receptors are responsible for vasoconstriction (the the narrowing of the blood vessels, which results in the reduction of blood flow to that body area). The drug increases this activity of the receptors. This provides the relief of migraine by decreasing the vascular inflammation. The receptors are located as well in the trigerminal nerve. Imitrex also affects them. This would explain the drug’s effectiveness in the treatment of cluster headaches.
Imitrex is used for the treatment of migraine. Imitrex must be taken after the attack has already started. Imitrex doesn’t act as a preventive drug, and can’t reduce the quantity of migraine attacks.
Imitrex can be found in 3 different dosages – 25, 50 and 100 mg pills. The effect of the medicine depends on the dose (the higher it is, the better is the effect). However, you shouldn’t exceed the recommended dosage due to the risk of adverse effects. The dose varies from person to person.
Imitrex must be used only when necessary. Therefore, the daily dosage for the drug doesn’t exist. Take the drug according to the doctor’s prescription. If the migraine persists even after a few hours, you can take another dose. However, the maximum daily dose must never exceed 200mg.
Skipping the dose
Imitrex must be used only for the treatment of migraine attacks. Therefore, there is no specific time for the use of this drug. However, you should wait at least two hours before repeating the dose.
As indicated above, Imitrex may cause serious adverse effects (or even fatal, if you have myocardial ischemia). Imitrex can lead to the coronary artery spasm, ischemic colitis and peripheral artery disease, whose symptoms include blood in stool and headache.
If you’re using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) in combination with Imitrex, you may develop a Serotonin syndrome, which can be very dangerous. The symptoms of this disease are: hallucinations and excitement, vomiting, loose bowels or sickness, loss of coordination and overactive reflexes.
In some cases, the use of this drug may cause a sharp rise in the blood pressure. Imitrex must not be used by the patients suffering from hypertension. Imitrex triggers hypersensitivity reactions in some patients. The possibility of this increase if you have suffered from hypersensitivity to multiple allergens. If you note any signs of allergic reaction, for example hives, face swelling or breathing problems, you should stop the treatment at once.
If you’ve noticed any of the symptoms indicated above, stop taking the drug and consult your physician at once.
