Diakof is a sugar-free cough syrup, mostly used for the treatment of different types of cough. It is considered one of the most popular asthma drugs. We should note that as chronic cough is usually caused by asthma, this drug has the ability to treat the main cause –i.e. asthma – as well.
How it acts
Diakof has expectorant and mucolytic properties which allows you to relieve expectoration and reduce the viscosity of bronchial secretions. The drug’s antitussive properties allows it to decrease irritation in the throat. In addition, its anti-microbial and anti-allergic provide relief from coughs caused by different diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, etc.
This drug is mostly used to relieve chronic cough and other consequences of asthma. Diakof can cure such disease as bronchial hyper-responsiveness. This illness is usually caused by the inflammatory mediator release. Diakof can decrease these effects by reducing the sensitivity to such states.
The medicine is usually taken in the form of syrup. The dosage depends on the severity of the diseases, patient’s reaction to the drug and as his/her health state and age. Thus, kids and adults must take different doses. If you skipped the dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is time to take the next dosage, skip it and take only the scheduled one, as the overdose can cause adverse effects.
Luckily, this drug rarely cause adverse effects. However, misuse or overdose can enhance the inflammation and aggravate your health state. For instance, kids and teenagers must take the reduced dose to avoid the risk of inflammation and face swelling.
To prevent these consequences, you should follow these precautions:
Consult your doctor before choosing the dosage
Measure the dosage properly by means of a measuring cup
Inform your doctor if you’re taking any other drug for asthma or cough
Don’t use the drug if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
Make sure you don’t have allergy to any components of the drug
Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can reduce the efficiency of the drug
In some cases, the drug can aggravate your condition – particularly if you take the wrong dosage or use it longer than necessary. For that reason, you should consult your doctor to find out the right dosage.
If you believe that this drug is not enough for the treatment of your disease, you may combine it with the other asthma drug. But first you must make sure that it will not react to other components of the other drugs negatively.
